May Stanford Month at Airtronics

The Airtronics-Stanford partnership went into full swing last month, with Airtronics hosting a class tour, starring in a professor’s video, and assisting graduate students with a design project. The action kicked off with a tour of our facility by the “Magic of Materials and Manufacturing” class. Judging by the students’ enthusiasm during the tour, the smart questions they asked, and the follow-up essays they wrote, the experience was a rewarding one for all. (Photo courtesy of Tim Wong)

“Airtronics was by far the most impressive facility we have visited,” wrote one student, who expounded on some of the things he learned, including the difference between hard and soft tooling, the advantages of our fully automated Amada machines, and the fact that masking is the most time- and labor-intensive operation in the entire facility.

“They were mesmerized,” said Professor David Beach, who returned to Airtronics later that week to video the punching, robotic forming, masking, painting, hardware and final assembly of blank end panels for Networking Equipment Chassis. He will edit the footage this summer and use the final 5-7 minute video (as a “virtual field trip”) in his “Design & Manufacturing” and “Magic of Materials” classes. Narration will be provided by Airtronics President and CEO Jeff Burke, who also provided Professor Beach with 30 chassis end panels to hand out in class before showing the video.

A week after the tour, two graduate students contacted Jeff Burke requesting assistance with a design project. They wanted advice and a price quote for fabricating 15 prototype “Trust Cards.” While Jeff didn’t know how these cards would be used, he knew exactly how to produce them, which he did, much to the students’ satisfaction.

Engaging with Stanford is a win-win proposition. Whenever we share our knowledge and expertise with these young smart students, we gain a greater appreciation for what we do here every day. We always get back so much more than we give.
